Online Poker

Poker is conceivably one of the most popular card games played today, with a rich history that goes back hundreds of years. Most people’s minds will automatically go to an old saloon in the Wild West as soon as they hear the word. For some, nothing beats the thrill of learning an opponent’s tells or bluffing your way through a weak hand and taking the table. It’s a form of socially accepted lying that carries with it an excitement that can pay off in a big way. Unfortunately, the majority of us don’t have time to sit in a smoke-filled back room playing cards all day to pass the time. No worries, with the ever-growing popularity of poker, it has become even hotter online than it was in the old West or any gentleman’s club. It can be found in several varieties in any online casino.

Basic Rules

While there are many types of poker, the general rules are the same: cards are dealt to all players, and then rounds of betting follow. Most often, these rounds include the opportunity to discard and receive new cards. One of Poker’s most popular variations is Texas Hold’em. In this game, each player is dealt two cards, face down and then they can place bets based on those cards. Next, the dealer will lay out the ‘flop’ which is a set of three cards dealt to the table, all face-up. The goal of each player is to put together the best hand of five cards using the two they have and the face-up cards on the table. After the flop has been laid out another round of bets is made, and then the dealer puts out a fourth card for everyone, called the ‘turn’ followed by another round of bets. The last card dealt to the table is the ‘River’ and is followed by the last round of bets before the players reveal their cards. The player with the best hand of five cards from the available seven is the winner of the pot.

Variations of Online Poker

There are many variations of poker, and each has its own unique strategies, excitement, and rules for play. We outlined Texas Hold’em above, which is a very popular and straightforward version. It shares some similarities with another version called Omaha in that five cards are dealt to the table in this game as well. Omaha stands on its own in that four cards are dealt face down to each player and only two of those four may be used in combination with three from the table to create a hand. This can even be confusing to seasoned players who may get excited when receiving the beginnings of a great hand in their face-down cards. If you happen to get four of a kind, you must remember that you can only use two of them when building your hand. Omaha can be a rowdy and action packed game with multi-way pots and hi-low variations.

Another popular version of poker is 7 Card Stud which is a classic style and usually a little more sedate. Play begins with the dealer ‘burning’ a card from the deck and then dealing three cards to each player, with the first two face down and the third face up. This is followed by the first round of betting, beginning with the player showing the lowest card and must be at least the table minimum bet. Next, the players each receive a fourth card, and another round of betting begins with the person showing the highest hand, and the round is usually at a limited or lower stake. After this, two more rounds of face up cards and betting are completed so that each player has two cards face down and four cards face up – a final card is then dealt to each of the players face down and the person with the highest hand reveals their cards unless another player wishes to try and raise the bet one last time. The player with the best hand of five cards wins the pot.

Mobile Online Poker

As popular as poker is, it’s easy to understand why the mobile online poker experience is so hot right now. You can log in anywhere and anytime to play as long as you have your mobile device with you. Casinos offer a software download that will set up the play portal on your computer or a dedicated app you can download to your tablet or phone so that you can carry your account with you and play with the same balance no matter which device you choose to play from. All you need to do is visit your trusted app store and search for the casino’s page, or you can visit the online casino itself and get the app sent to your mobile device using an email or QR code to start the download. However you choose to get it, they’re super easy to set up, and you’ll be online and playing your favourite version of online poker in a matter of minutes.

Different Options for Online Play

Once you’ve done your research and decided what version of poker seems like the best fit for you, go over the rules for general play and see if there are any that are specific to the casino. Play a few rounds to get comfortable with the online or mobile experience and then you can decide if you want to join a tournament or play Sit-and-Go. Poker tournaments have been the rage for literally hundreds of years with some prizes reaching into the millions and players spanning the globe. Online poker is no different. You can play in a tournament against other players from around the world right from your living room. Tournaments typically have a few requirements to meet before you can join and include a buy-in to get a spot at a table. You then play against the people at your table until only one player is left who then moves on to play against players remaining at other tables. This process continues until someone wins the final hand and takes the full pot. Tournaments can last for several hours to days with set hours for play.

If this isn’t for you, no worries, you can also play Sit and Go. This option is perfect for a punter just starting out or the person that has a limited time to play. In Sit and Go, you only need to put up the minimum table bet to join a game, and you then play for as long as you’d like or as long as you can still meet the minimum table bet per hand. There is no commitment to stay at the table so you can leave at any time.

Casino Poker

Online casino poker has become so popular that some variations have been created just to meet the demand of the ever-changing masses of people that now choose to play. Some games like Caribbean poker and stud have become so highly demanded that brick and mortar casinos offering poker UK or anywhere else, have adopted versions of them to entice players into their establishments.

Whatever your preference may be, you’d be hard pressed to find an online poker game that won’t meet your needs, so don’t delay, play today!
